Discover the rugged and spectacular southern coastline of Australia in this 12-day journey through the highlights of Victoria & South Australia. Visit Australia’s cultural capital and most populous city, travel along the Great Ocean Road to see the 12 Apostles, get up close to Australia’s weird and wonderful wildlife, visit one of the best wine and food regions in the country and swim with sea lions off the coast of Port Lincoln.
Day 1: Arrival in Melbourne
Welcome to Australia! Your guides will be eagerly awaiting your arrival into Melbourne. After a quick introduction and orientation, you will transfer to your accommodation in the city. After you settle in your guides will take you for lunch at Queen Victoria Markets – comprising over 600 businesses in the Southern Hemisphere’s largest open-air market. You will have time to explore the almost two cities blocks of food, activity and souvenir stores before making our way out to the popular Melbourne beachside suburb of St Kilda for dinner.
Day 2: Highlights of Melbourne
After breakfast this morning your guides will take you on the insider’s walking tour of Melbourne, hitting all the highlights and a few hidden gems of Australia’s cultural capital. From secret laneway restaurants to street art and mouthwatering coffee stops you will undoubtably fall in love with this city. This afternoon you will ride the fastest elevator in the southern hemisphere as you head up to the tallest observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere. From here you will get a birds eye view of the city and you watch the sunset.
Day 3: Great Ocean Road to Apollo Bay
This morning we will load up the bus and head West out of Melbourne as we travel the Great Ocean Road down to Apollo Bay. Along the way we will make stops into the Great Otway National Park to look at waterfalls and lookouts. We will have lunch at Wye River today overlooking the ocean then drive into Apollo Bay to check in to your accommodation. This evening you will be heading out to get a glimpse of some of Australia’s nocturnal wildlife with a Dusk Tour at a local free-range wildlife reserve. You will have the opportunity to see wildlife that is endemic to Australia such as wallabies, koalas, pademelons, kangaroos, bettongs, potoroos, gliders and bandicoots.
Day 4: Cape Otway and the 12 Apostles
Today we set out to see some of the most iconic sights in Australia. We will walk through ancient fern forests and 200-ft trees, climb the oldest lighthouse in Australia and see the 12 Apostles. This stretch of coastline is made up of predominantly sheer sandstone cliffs that are constantly eroding and creating new and interesting features. Known as the shipwreck coast, and for good reason, this region played a very important role in the establishment of the country. Your guides will show you the best lookouts and gorges as we meander westward. This afternoon we will arrive into the town of Warrnambool to check in to our accommodation before heading to dinner as a group.
Day 5: Aboriginal Culture & Coonawarra Vineyards
After a relaxed breakfast this morning we will make the short drive to Victoria’s largest dormant volcano called Tower Hill. This unique geological formation is known as a ‘nested maar’ volcano and last erupted around 32,000 years ago. Today it plays an important ecological role as it is home to a myriad different bird, mammal, and reptile species. This morning however, you will be led by an Aboriginal guide through the reserve as they share the interesting cultural and geological history of the area as well as share some local foods from the forest known as ‘bush tucker’. Keep your eye out for emu’s! After a picnic lunch in the park we will jump back in the bus and continue driving west across state lines into South Australia. Arriving in the town of Coonawarra, we will check into our accommodation before heading out into town for dinner.
Day 6: Naracoorte Caves & Adelaide
This morning you will take a short drive to South Australia’s only World Heritage Listed site – Naracoorte Caves. Comprising of 5 different cave systems, this area is one of the world’s most important fossil sites. For over 500,000 years giant marsupials such as the wombat-like Diprotodon, Thylacoleo the marsupial lion and giant kangaroos roamed the Limestone Coast, with many of their fossils now on display here. You will be guided down into the cave through magnificent speleothem chambers as you marvel at the huge stalactites, stalagmites and helectites. Driving further west this afternoon we will head into the main city of South Australia – Adelaide. Once settled into you accommodation, you will take a walk through the famous Adelaide Botanical Gardens on our way to dinner.
Day 7: Adelaide Hills Food & Wine
After a light breakfast this morning we will embark on a full day food and wine tour through the Adelaide Hills to some of the region’s best vineyards and restaurants. You will get to sample fresh produce from the region and meet some of the local growers and restauranteurs. Famous for its scenery and fresh produce, the Adelaide Hills never disappoints. This afternoon you will return to Adelaide with a full belly and lots of laughs.
Day 8: Private Island
You will bid Adelaide farewell this morning as we board a short flight in Adelaide to the small coastal town of Port Lincoln. From there, we will board a passenger ferry bound for a 2,400 acre private island a short distance off the coast – Boston Island. We will be greeted by the owner and our host for the next 3 nights. Surrounded by pristine white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, this place will ignite your spirit for adventure. This afternoon, your host will take you on a sunset walk and share a bit about the unique and fascinating history of the island.
Day 9: Island Exploration
After a big, cooked breakfast this morning you will head out on the only transport on the island - tractor and trailer. Your host will take you on a scenic tour to discover some of the island’s unique geography, wildlife & beaches. Today will be what you want it to be – swimming, fishing for calamari or relaxing on the beach with a good book. You will have the opportunity to assist the farmers with shearing or mustering sheep or even search for the islands only Little Penguin colony. We will reconvene back at the homestead this afternoon to watch the sunset over the bay and enjoy some wine and a cheese board.
